Play with arm balances

We all fall down in life! It is how we recover that defines us and ultimately shapes our future. Practicing balancing postures is an effective way to develop the courage and determination we need to try again when life is not going as planned. Together we will play with balance in a light-hearted and curious way.

We will fall a lot and laugh a lot, and ultimately develop the courage and strength that is necessary to be strong and flexible in both body and mind. We will explore together how to get into different arm balances, how to practice toward the full pose, and how to use props. We will also cover more advanced variations for those who already are confident in arm balances, and practice transitions that incorporate the poses into a flow.

  1. Bakāsana – Crow

  2. Parśva Bakāsana – Side Crow

  3. Eka-Pāda-Bakāsana - One Legged Crow

  4. Aṣṭāvakrāsana - Eight Bends Pose

  5. Kauṇḍinyāsana - Sage Kaundinya's pose

  6. Ekā Pāda Galavāsana - One Legged Sage Galava Pose

  7. Gālavāsana - Sage Galava Pose

  8. Mayūrāsana- Peacock Pose

This course is appropriate for everyone. Balance is not a place you arrive at and then you are done. It is an ever-changing point in between that we need to make a continuous effort to stay in.

Freedom in Inversions - Explore Headstands

Learning to invert the body, in headstands and other positions, can be a joyous and fun experience. There are many small steps that we can take towards the full expression of these postures. With a little daily effort, over time, you will float effortlessly into and out of these liberating poses.

Mastering inversions is the antidote to fear, weakness, imbalanced hormones, anxiety and depression. Inverting the body regulates the nervous system and the endocrine system. At first these postures may appear to be stressful, but once mastered they hold the key to a quick transformation from tensed up to mellowed out.

At this workshop we will look at several variations of headstand, using different props for those working on overcoming fear or dealing with sensitive necks. We will go into complex variations as well, for those who are comfortable in headstand already.

Building Core Strength

Building Core Strength

Our core is our power source, facilitating the movement of the body and housing our inner organs and central nervous system. A strong core helps us prevent injuries (especially to the lower back), protects our insides and maintains the integrity of our musculature.

It’s important to build core stability first, then core strength, learning how to make the deeper muscles work first. Once we have a strong core, everything else falls into place, making us strong, stable, balanced, powerful and less prone to injuries.

In this workshop we will briefly discuss core anatomy, understanding that the core is more than a “6-pack” and recognizing its other important components We’ll then explore and access our core through different movements, followed by a core-centered practice that will bring new awareness to the elements we discussed.

Breath beyond the pose

Pranayama Immersion Course

Yoga is a tool for transformation and at the heart of the practice is the breath. It is through the breath that we connect with and learn to influence our prana, or life power. Using pranayama techniques, you can learn how to balance and harness this greater power within to prevent illnesses, regain confidence and clarity, and find emotional and mental stability.

This series covers both pranayama techniques and how to practice and teach breath adaptation in asana. You will learn: cleansing breaths (kriyas), energizing breath techniques, how to increase lung capacity; as well as modalities to ease anxiety, balance the nervous system, promote digestion, cool an overheated body, and more. As a bonus, you will learn about adding sacred sound (mantra) to our breath work as a means to deepen our focus and intention.

This course will give you tools for both your personal understanding and growth within this powerful practice, as well as how to integrate it into your yoga classes, workshops and retreats. The course is perfect for yoga teachers, therapist, energy workers, or anyone interested in practicing and learning in depth about the power of the breath for physical well-being and spiritual progress.

You will study:

Anatomy of Subtle Body (pranas, nadīs, koshas, chakras)

Anatomy of Breathing for improvement of breathing patterns

Subtle Anatomy of Pranayama ( ancient model as taught by Sri Krishnamacharya)

Anatomy of Bandhas

Pranayama techniques for physical benefits

Yin Yoga Immersion

Yin Yoga Immersion

  • Clarksburg Yoga and Wellness (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This comprehensive training is a valuable and in-depth exploration of the Yin Yoga practice, developed for both serious students and teachers interested in learning the core aspects of Yin Yoga and it’s applications in daily practice and in teaching skills.

Yin Yoga utilizes muscularly relaxed poses usually supported on the floor, that are held for longer periods of time, in order to safely and systematically stimulate chemical re-generative responses in connective tissues, particularly of fascia, ligaments and within joint capsules. Through modest traction and compression, one trains the structural tissues to reduce the process of contracture that shortens tissues and can cause degeneration, adhesions, pain, and decreased range of motion. Yin Yoga's methodical and subtle approach provides lubrication, mobility, and a sense of lightness to the body's structure and energetics and therefore to the mind.

This Immersion includes:

• The history of Yin Yoga

• Study of core principles of Yin Yoga, understand the difference between Yin and other forms of practice and application

• Study the anatomy and biomechanics of the spine, pelvis and shoulder girdle in relationship to Yin practice

• Discuss principles of tension and compression in Yin practice

• Learn Yin poses and their counterparts

• Learn the principles of sequencing of Yin practice, with relevant modifications and adjustments

You will receive a manual with all the topics covered and with illustrations of the poses, counter-poses and adaptations.

Embracing Self-Study: Inner Guidance

Embracing Self-Study: Inner Guidance

Many of us who practice Yoga feel a pull to work deeper, to go beyond the body and to focus on refining our character and understanding our mind. To engage in what's known as Svādhyāya, or study of oneself.

But reflecting on our inner qualities and true nature and identifying the things that keep us from becoming more truthful and compassionate requires time, discipline and resources that are hard to find in our daily life.  Even with a regular practice, we find ourselves still yearning for deep introspection.

Often, we seek answers to that in different traditions, separating the practice of asana, breath and meditation into separate paths. Yet it’s possible to combine all three into one deeper experience of Self Study.

In this series of workshops, we will create space using the Yogic toolbox, which contains sound, breath and movement. We will explore concepts such as compassion and forgiveness: what they mean to you, and how we can use them to begin transforming our mind.

This powerful trio of tools can unlock new pathways for transforming the heart and mind along with the body.  Expanding our compassion or embracing forgiveness becomes as possible as achieving a deeper backbend or better-aligned Warrior pose.

We will work with one concept at a time, using a conducive mantra to penetrate our mind and breath, to reveal what is stored in our body and is holding us back, and creating a reflective state of mind.

We will end with meditation, embracing the changes and shifts that occurred during practice.

Samankonāsana-middle splits and how to progressively work towards it

An asana in itself is never the goal of our practice. Instead, we focus on building the steady mind beyond it. That, however, does not mean we do not practice diligently and try to understand our body better as we move it in a specific direction. Therefore, this workshop is dedicated to a single pose and how to practice it, using biomechanics, breath and mantra together as we get deeper into the physical frame.

In this workshop we will work step by step towards Samankonāsana-middle splits. There will be different elements and methods for each person to apply and work with. We will use breath and mantra to help us overcome any energetic blockages in the hip area, as well as both passive and active stretching methods. You will walk out with a different perspective on your body and a written practice guide to help you as you continue to work on all elements of the asana.
